A client posed a problem to me that I think almost every person can relate to: eating out and the nutritional dangers it can pose. Everyday she eats out at work and finds it hard to say no to going or once there finds it hard to order “safe” foods. Here is her comment and I think it is right on with how many of us feel:
“Most restaurants have reasonable options on their menu, but I feel embarrassed being the overweight person who fails at dieting, fruitlessly ordering the skinny food again. For some reason, I am embarrassed to order the skinny diet food, but not embarassed to pig out.”
How many times have you felt that way? It’s amazing to me that we are so willing to backseat our own health and weightloss efforts because we might not want to draw attention to ourselves or not eat the stuff everyone else is eating. Of course, we know that after the meal is over comes a healthy dose of self-loathing all day for “blowing it” again.
I want to talk strategies. If you are reading this post, I know you can either sympathize or you have a solution. My own suggestions were to start bringing your own lunch and using the excuse of “well, I already made this so I don’t want to waste it,” or simply take the cooler to the restaurant until people quit asking you to go with them.
I know it’s not fun, it’s not glamorous, and it sure as heck seems different, but maybe that’s what we have to do to win the battle of the bulge…just quit being like everyone else and eat right to out live them all.
OK…discuss amongst yourselves.
