Protein Shakes as Meal Replacements
(Note: Every Wednesday is "Phit Cuisine" day. We will be posting a special blog on a topic related to Phit-n-Phat and link it to discussions on the forums.)
Most of us think of protein shakes as a post workout drink/feeding. And they are perfect for that use, in that they supply much needed protein, some carbs and healthy fats and liquids to the body when it needs it most.
But have you ever thought about using a Protein Shake or Smoothie as a meal replacement? Especially as a snack, protein shakes are really tremendous when used as a healthy snack or meal on the go. I'm not talking about just protein powder and water, as you may have post-workout. (BTW, my favorite protein powder is BSN's Syntha 6. I find it mixes well and has a great taste. It's not the cheapest or lowest in calories/carbs, however.)
A healthy active diet should aim to have protein with every meal, including snacks. Precision Nutrition actually refers to all meals and snacks as "feedings" for that reason - every one of them should be complete from a nutritional perspective.
Yes, these are higher in calories than plain shakes. That's why I suggest them as a meal replacement. They also give you a full complement of nutrients, taste great and are portable.
Some of my favorites (all posted to the PnP Recipe Blog) are:
-
Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie: I usually use Power Butter, which is peanut butter with flax seed. For a really good boost, substitute coffee for water. I use a nut flavored coffee and it is delish!
-
Pumpkin Pie Smoothie: I've actually used this one as a breakfast when walking my dog. Great for fiber and it tastes like pumpkine pie filling!
-
Nut and Flax Smoothie: Nice when you don't want something as sweet. And it gives you the health fats and fiber from the nuts.

Some other thoughts on ways to jazz up your protein shakes. Keep a bag of frozen berries in your freezer and toss 1/4 cup into your shake. It will boost your antioxidants and fiber. A banana, peach, FAGE or other yogurts, cottage cheese, V8 (nod to Bill!) are all interesting and healthy options. Experiment a bit!!
