I get asked this DAILY. And since it's Monday, I've had about ten emails so far wanting to know what keeps me motivated??? How do I get motivated? What do I need to do to lose weight?
I have to be HONEST. For me I plan, plan, and then over plan because I can't wait for motivation. I NEVER EVER start the week without...
- Workouts on the calendar, posted somewhere so I feel like other people are watching, and I probably am setting up workout dates in advance on the days I know my mind will suck. Like tomorrow is my leg day. I know I tend to donk it off so I texted a friend today and made "date" for in the morning. I don't have a choice now.
- Food prep. Girls, I don't make fancy menus but I do make stuff I know I WILL eat, I WILL have portioned, and I WILL grab when all I want is to call Domino's because the EASY button is so close at all times.
Sitting around whining you aren't motivated or thinking a light bulb will freaking blow up in your head is the EASY way of saying "I don't feel like doing any work to change my weight, health, and life. I want a little elf to run his ass up on me, sprinkle dust all over me, and magically I start losing weight."
Who the hell has all these light bulb moments? I sure as heck didn't. I got off my ass and walked instead of always asking what's the PERFECT way to lose weight? I can think of perfect plans while my butt is hauling around the hood.
I also quit being an a-hole to Corinne and expecting her to make perfect food choices right out of the gate. I just said do better things and don't starve. When I starve I do bad things, so don't do that.
And waiting for motivation, huh? If you are thinking you are miserable then what the hell else will motivate you if your own misery isn't doing it? Do you need a cancer diagnosis, diabetes, crippled knees and hips, or early death? You know what I call waiting for EXTERNAL motivation? WASTING TIME!
Something you might not know about me, 2-3 days a week I'm not motivated to eat right or exercise. I love driving by McDonald's on a stressful day and thinking I should pull in. I ADORE showing up to the workouts SORE, TIRED, and staring at 300+ emails to respond to before teaching bootcamp and picking up my child!
If I depended on motivation I would be moving on up the scale! I can't rely on motivation because it is fleeting. What I rely on is habits: planning, food prep, proper supplements and carrying food with me so I'm not hungry. My motivation is strong when I have the BASICS going. If I don't have food with me...guess what? The first time I'm busy or stressed I'm eating doo-doo. When I don't plan workouts I end up being TIRED and everyone is having an emergency around me. Oh my favorite is when I skip my supplements and wonder why I'm feeling like crap and my body is over stressed. That's a nice way to feel like doing what you SHOULD be doing.
By the way, not to be a "salesperson" but the crappier you eat the more you need some healthy, quality supplements to hold you over UNTIL you make the change. If you can afford Macaroni Grill, Starbucks, and booze you can put some healthy stuff in your mouth, too!
My message to you is to look inside. If you are LOOKING for motivation that's all you need. Motivation is DONE. Now you need to look at your behaviors and actions and start putting those in place.
